I do, however, use my laptop for backing up work (this is the opposite of how most people work, but I find it to be far more effective when switching computers a lot).Having a hard-drive with a large amount of disk space was crucial for me, as I have a lot of music (at least 80 gigabytes) so I needed somewhere that I could store it. Not only that, but I also needed to know that all of the music and files that I put on my Passport would be protected properly, and I wouldn't one day wake up to the horrifying fact that they'd all been deleted or become corrupted. This is an experience that I have already had once before, and is one that I hope to never have again for as long as I live. In this article we take a look at the 1TB drive which is the most popular product in the range. The model number is WDH1U10000E.First of all the drive is well packaged and comes with a USB cable, power adapter, quick start guide and the drive itself. Once unpacked the my book essential edition 1TB is a great looking drive with a very sleek looking casing. It will certainly look good on your desk and can be positioned either horizontally or vertically. Setup was easy, just connect the data and power cables and start your PC. Your computers operating system will auto detect the drive and install the necessary drivers without you doing a thing. The drive itself comes pre loaded with some trial software consisting of back up and sync utilities. It's up to the user whether they feel they need to install them but they are not essential for the use of the drive. Note that the Western Digital My Book comes with a two year manufacturers warranty.In use the My Book Essential is very quiet and doesn't generate a lot of heat with the casing only ever being lukewarm to the touch, even after prolonged use. The only issue we found was the absence of a power button. The drive turns on and off with your PC but it would be nice to switch it off when not needed.The Western Digital comes factory formatted in the FAT32 file system which places limitations on the maximum file size that can be stored. The limit is around 4GB so if you are planning on using the WD for storing any large files (video files for example) then you should consider re-formatting it to the NTFS file system before you start using it. It is possible to convert the drive whilst keeping data intact but it's much easier to do it before you start using it. Right clicking on the drive in My Computer and using the 'quick format' option is the best way to do this and it should only take a couple of minutes. The full format option would take a lot longer with the only difference being that each sector of the drive is checked for errors - something which isn't necessary on a new drive. If you use Linux (or ubuntu) on your PC then this will be compatible with NTFS. For Mac users your computer will sort out the formatting for you when you first connect it. WD usually do Mac specific versions of their products which will have the formatting sorted out straight from the factory.Transfer speeds are pretty fast using USB 2.0 and are on a par with the competition with a 2GB file being transferred in just under five minutes. The drive also works on the USB 1.1 interface but will be a lot slower as a result. Due to the nature of my work, I am one of those that believe that there is no such thing as 'enough storage'. Here is a quick review of the ever reliable, Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive.

I have always been a fan of Western Digital hard drives as they have proven to be quite durable and very reliable. Some of my work involves the access of large files on a daily basis so it is very important that my hard drive can keep up with my work. I have been using the v1.0 storage device for a couple of years now and have been anticipating the release of the v2.0. Lets take a look at the new Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive and what it has got to offer.

The new Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive is slightly thinner than its predecessor and has a shiny black casing. It looks prone to scratches and finger prints but seems to be a small compromise for the new cool looks.

Costing a little over $100, this model proves to be quite a bargain for a 1TB hard drive. The lower price tag does come with a few trade offs though. Most consumers today prefer their hard drive to be quite so like most models, the My Book does not come with a built-in cooling fan. Because of that, it is vital that you keep the air holes behind the unit unobstructed to prolong the life of the storage device. The power on/off button is also missing from this model, probably to reduce cost. Nevertheless, it is programmed to automatically turn off after about 10 minutes of inactivity or when the PC is turned off.

The Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive comes with the FAT format that does not support files that are larger than 4GB each. The first thing that you should do when you get the hard drive is to reformat it to the NTFS format. This can be done under 'Administrative Tools' under Control Panel.

As mentioned earlier, this model does not come with a cooling fan so your hard drive should be virtually silent. Loud clicking noises or grinding sounds may be signs of failure. I have been using one of this for about 14 months now and it has been functioning without a glitch. My older v1.0 model is currently almost 3 years old. The Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive comes highly recommended for those who are looking for a reliable storage at a reasonable price.
